Strong leadership and good teaching have helped a primary school to maintain its ‘good’ Ofsted rating.

Summerlea Community Primary School, in Rustington, was visited by a team of inspectors led by Eileen Chadwick, and their findings were published on September 9.

Their report stated: “The executive headteacher and headteacher provide strong leadership. They are ably supported by other senior leaders and are successfully improving the quality of teaching.”

The achievements of the pupils at Summerlea were judged to be ‘good’ and the report noted the rate of their progress was improving and their attainment was above average by the end of Years 2 and 6.

Behaviour was seen to be good – and, in some cases, outstanding – with the children showing “very good attitudes” to learning.

The report added: “They treat others with tolerance and respect and, as a result, the school is a harmonious community.”

Ms Chadwick and her team made a few recommendations for future improvement which would need to be addressed if Summerlea was to earn the top ‘outstanding’ rating.

The first was to help raise pupils’ achievement levels by developing good spelling, punctuation and handwriting.

Also to ensure children with the most ability in maths were moved on to harder work quicker to encourage their progress.

The next was to improve the quality of teaching of writing in Reception, to provide consistently challenging writing activities in the outdoor area and to encourage children to apply their knowledge of phonics – the sounds letters make – when writing.
