Pupils at Bury CE Primary School were thrilled to meet award-winning author Billy Bob Buttons.

He read some of his stories and shared his top tips for writing during workshops with the children on Tuesday.

Head teacher Thomas Moore said: “The children were very excited. Being such a small school with class sizes well below the national average, all of the children got to speak directly to the author if they wished, offering real quality time and engagement between author and child.

“The children really enjoyed the opportunity to ask Billy lots of questions and Billy was very impressed with the quality of their questions - so much so that he was convinced one of the year-three children was in year six.

“The children ended the day by dragging their parents back in to school so that they could get one of Billy’s books personally signed. The books were really popular and, who knows, by offering opportunities like this it could be just what is needed to kick start the career of a new author from Bury.”

Billy Bob Buttons is the pen name of Edward Hugh Trayer, a British-born children and young adult novelist who has written 13 children’s novels including the Rubery Book Award finalist, Felicity Brady and the Wizard’s Bookshop.

Mr Moore added: “Meeting Billy Bob Buttons was just one of the many excellent things that have been taking place recently at Bury.

“We are building a locally relevant curriculum built on quality teaching through real life experiences.

“We are set in a stunning location within the South Downs and are just embarking on a long term project with the National Trust to support them in the Rise of Northwood. In turn, they are supporting us to enrich our grounds for wildlife.

“The RSPB recently visited, helping us to identify the wildlife within our grounds and we are about to start a whole school topic, Leave Only Footprints, reconnecting the whole school community with the environment around us.”
