Family and friends gathered for a double celebration in at Barnham Village Hall - for centenarian Margaret Crook, her daughter and son-in-law.

Maggie and Peter Lynch have just reached their 50th wedding anniversary, and Maggie’s mother, Margaret, will be 100 on Monday.

Margaret was born in Aldershot on April 18, 1916, and grew up in Gillingham, Kent.

She then moved to Chiswick, West London, where she worked as a statistics clerk for United Biscuits.

Margaret was married to Syd for more than 50 years before he died in 1991. They had two sons and one daughter.

The pair moved to Barnham in 1988 to live near Maggie and Peter

Margaret has three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-granddaughters. She is known affectionately as Diddy, the name her eldest great-grandson called her as a young child.

Relative Colin Jones said: “She is very family orientated and loves spending time with her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

“Margaret is a remarkable lady for her age and she lived independently until three years ago.”

Having grown up in Chiswick and Brentford, Maggie and Peter met when she was 15 and he 17. They were married on April 2, 1966 and have two daughters, seven grandchildren and four great granddaughters.

The moved to Barnham in 1976 and Peter started his own precision tool engineering business.

Maggie worked as an estate agent, then as secretary and entertainments manager at a residential care home.

Maggie used to enjoy putting on plays with The Eastergate Players and Littlehampton Operatic Society, with Peter helping out behind the scenes and building sets, but both are now retired.

A joint celebration was held at Barnham Village Hall on Saturday, April 2, attended by many family and friends, some from as far as Australia.

Margaret will also be having an open house for family and friends on Monday for her birthday.
