ONE of the first tasks for new Top Gear presenter Chris Evans could be as the official starter of this years British Lawn Mower Racing Association 12 hour endurance race.

He was invited to start the internationally renowned race, which now takes place at Five Oaks near Billingshurst, by one of the organisers during an interview on his BBC Radio 2 show this morning (Wednesday July 28).

The DJ who last visited the event in 2007 was invited to send the drivers off for the overnight race which starts at 8pm on Saturday, August 8.

Chris promised to be there saying ‘the kids would love it’ but he added he would ‘have to ask the wife first’.

The idea of British Lawn Mower Racing started in The Cricketers Pub at Wisborough Green 42 years ago.

The first races took place in the village before it moved to Brinsbury and then to its new home at Five Oaks.

Among the many legends who have put their foot to the metal over the years have been Sir Sterling Moss and five times winner of Le Mans, Derek Bell.
