Arun Yacht Club launched its diamond jubilee celebrations in style with a two-day beer festival.

Littlehampton mayor Marian Ayres opened the event on Saturday, watched by guests including the commodores from other sailing clubs, harbour master Billy Johnson and members past and present.

Sixty years ago, a group of sailors had the vision to start a sailing club on the River Arun, an exciting of river with a picturesque outlook.

Their vision has been brought up to date by the club management, using the services of Abby Wilkinson from design agency Loosemarbles, ‘bringing the outside in’.

The colour palette combines marine life with the fantastic sunsets witnessed from the clubhouse on the west bank.

Will Harvey, club secretary, said: “It is a brave, exciting move forward for the club and one that signals the club’s intention to reach out further to the local community, schools and colleges – a family friendly club for people of all ages and experience.

“Entrance to the beer festival was free to everyone and it was so successful, the beer ran out.

“What better way to enjoy the weekend than jumping on the ferry, crossing the river and sampling some of the best and most interesting beers of Sussex – ten in all, plus five ciders – in what must surely be the most picturesque of venues, the sun terrace overlooking Littlehampton harbour?”

Upcoming diamond jubilee events include a boat jumble on Sunday and the club’s open day on May 22, when anyone can try out a dinghy or have a trip on a cruiser.
