THE WORLD'S longest bench could soon be in Littlehampton, as planning permission was granted yesterday (Wednesday, November 5).
Arun District Council's development control committee voted unanimously to approve the plans, for a 483m bench along the seafront, from the East Beach Cafe to Harbour Park.
Designed by Studio Weave with the help of pupils from Connaught Junior School, the multi-coloured steel structure will be made up of thousands of enamelled stainless steel bars, ad will include loops and twists.
The design will drop to the floor when passing access points top the beach, and will have recessed portions, to allow wheelchair users to sit alongside friends and family.
Councillor Norman Dingemans, Arun's cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: "This is an inspiring project that is really good news for this town.
"In this time of recession where local authorities have been forced to stall or abandon their regeneration plans, Arun pushes ahead relentlessly."
