HOMES near a car workshop at Barnham were evacuated last night (Wednesday, November 11) during a blaze involving a gas cylinder.
Concerned that the argon gas cylinder might explode, emergency services also cordoned off the area around the workshop at Barnham Road, while fire crews tackled the flames.
The alarm was raised just before 8.30pm and four fire crews from Bognor and Chichester rushed to the scene. A man and a pregnant woman who had been inside the premises when the fire started were taken to hospital with light smoke inhalation.
Firefighters cooled the gas cylinder and used a thermal imaging camera to check that it was safe to move it outside the building.
A car inside the workshop was destroyed and the building itself suffered 50 per cent damage.
