YOUNG people caught shoplifting in Horsham are being taken to Lewes Prison to deter them from future offending.
The scheme was started in April last year and is called the Crime Diversion Programme.

It is specifically aimed at reducing re-offending among young people aged ten-17.

So far, 16 people have completed the scheme with three awaiting prison visits and final interviews by the end of November.

It deals with first time offenders and encourages them to take responsibility for their behaviour.

The programme is designed for offenders who have been neither violent nor aggressive but who are caught stealing goods to the value of £300 or less.

The scheme includes a compulsory visit to Lewes Prison where they talk with inmates to understand about the impact crime can have on people's lives; the realities of prison life and what plans are already in place to re-integrate prisoners back into the community once they have served their jail term.

For comprehensive coverage of all the stories making the local news, read Friday's edition of the West Sussex County Times newspaper. The cost of the newspaper plus postage in England is £1.53 which can be paid for by credit card. Overseas rates are also available, on request.
