POLICE are warning residents to be wary of people calling at their homes, following a number of burglaries.

On May 7, a man went to flats in the Forge Way area of Billingshurst and stated that he was working on similar properties nearby and needed to check the water.

There was work being carried out nearby and the elderly resident believed the man was working on behalf of the contractors.

The man gained entry and appeared to be checking water pipes in the kitchen. It is believed that another person may have then entered the flat and stole cash from a handbag.

Entry was then gained to another flat nearby, under similar circumstances. The suspect is described as a white male, 25 years old, thin build, with short hair. Any witnesses to this incident are asked to contact DC Shaw at Horsham CID.

Police say all residents can protect themselves from this sort of crime, by ensuring that they only allow contractors in to their property, that have a pre arranged appointment.

All legitimate contractors will not be offended if you ask to see identification and check with their employers before you allow them access to the premises.

Never leave your front door open to allow other people into your property whilst you are distracted.
