ARMED police rushed to Billingshurst on Friday evening (May 16) after reports a man was pointing a gun in public.

Armed officers were called to Billingshurst High Street just before 5.30pm.

Horsham district police have issued a warning about the dangers of carrying firearms and imitation weapons in public.

Horsham district commander, chief inspector Steve Black, said: "The incident resulted in an armed police response and subsequent arrest of a local man.

"Armed police officers searched an address in the immediate area of Billingshurst High Street."

Police confirmed they had found a replica handgun.

CI Black said the impact and consequences of the incident should serve as a warning to those who intended on carrying such weapons in public.

He said the incident concluded peacefully and without further incident.

"We would warn anyone thinking of carrying weapons in public to think again," he said.

A 32-year-old man was arrested and has been bailed to return to Crawley Police Station on Friday June 27.
