WHEN I first came into local government, among my first jobs was to engage the community in grassroots initiatives to improve the local environment.
One event that I soon latched-on to was the annual Spring Clean Campaign, run by the Tidy Britain Group (now known as Encams).

Not long after I moved to Worthing, the Spring Clean Campaign was sadly put on hold by Encams, as other priorities came along.

I am pleased to see that the Spring Clean Campaign has now been reintroduced, with new branding, and held at a different time of year.

Now known as The Big Tidy Up, the campaign aims to be the biggest litter clearance event ever and both Adur and Worthing councils hope to be engaging with schools and community groups during September.

If you run a community group we would love to hear from you, especially if you have an idea for a particular area that you would like to carry out your activity.

The councils can support you by providing litter pickers, a means of disposing of the waste and other equipment to help with the event.

As part of the councils' contribution to the event, we would also like to hear nominations from the public for streets that would benefit from some deep cleansing.

Perhaps the street is so regularly parked with vehicles that it is normally impossible for the council sweepers to get right into the gutter?

As part of the campaign the councils will tackle the Dirty Dozen, or the 12 streets receiving the most number of nominations.

In most cases parking restrictions will be put in place so that the mechanical sweepers can be employed.

In the beginning of October, a further contribution to reducing street litter will come in the shape of phase three of the new wheeled bin service.

If you want to get involved in The Big Tidy Up or nominate a street that needs deep cleansing, please contact me at Adur and Worthing Council Services. I shall look forward to hearing from you.
