BELIEVE it or not, it's been almost a year since the first roll-out of Adur and Worthing's new wheeled bin service.
Everyone at the depot is now gearing up for the third phase of the new service, due to start in the week commencing October 6.
Having waited a year, it will be my turn to experience the service first hand as wheeled bins are delivered to the part of Worthing where I live.
This phase will add another 15,000 properties to the overall total and includes Goring-by-Sea, West Worthing, West Tarring, most of Gaisford Ward and a small part of Broadwater.
Evidence so far in the new service area is that the wheeled bins have helped reduce street litter on collection day and reduced the number of vermin attacks.
So far, the amount of waste being sent to landfill has reduced by approximately 10 per cent so far this year, while the recycling rate has topped 30 per cent for the first time.
Some surprising developments have arisen as a result of introducing wheeled bins, some good and some bad.
The number of garden waste wheeled bins issued confounded all estimates, with more than double the number expected.
The number of paper sacks sold has also increased enormously.
The global shortage of wheeled bins caught us on the hop but hopefully through our ordering policies we have managed to avoid the worst of the problems being experienced by other councils.
I would like to pay tribute to all the staff in the front line of delivering the refuse and recycling services.
Everybody at the depot has worked extremely hard to try to deal with people's individual problems.
There is a tremendous will on the part of Adur and Worthing Services staff to make the new service work.
If you have a problem, please be patient and we will try to sort it out for you.
