IT'S been a month since the Tidy Britain Group launched their bid to find some new celebrities to front their newly relaunched Keep Britain Tidy campaign.
Older readers may remember the halcyon days of this campaign in the 1970s and 1980s when we were urged to keep our streets clean by the likes of Abba, Morecambe and Wise, Marc Bolan, David Cassidy and Frank Bruno.

Now, the organisation is looking for 21st century celebrities to spread the message and make disposing of litter "cool" once again.

Apparently, the criteria for this "rubbish" job is that the celebrity must be passionate about the environment, be able to inspire others, be famous, not infamous, and be able to give up two days per year for free to front the campaign.

This unusual appeal has drawn quite a large response, but the Tidy Britain Group has not yet revealed who their final choices will be.

The timing of the campaign could not be better.

Over the last few years, the number of mass participation events has burgeoned, with street carnivals, rock festivals, sports events and garden shows all vying for space in the calendar.

An unfortunate culture has developed alongside these events as participants are almost encouraged to drop their litter.

Although this may be desirable for practical reasons, many people now extend this behaviour to almost every aspect of their lives, leading to intolerable litter in some public spaces.

This culture will almost certainly be on the hit list of Keep Britain Tidy, who were not shy recently in condemning the 275 tonnes of litter left behind after the British grand prix.

Although there is contingency in place to clean-up after events, litter is no respecter of boundaries and much of the stuff dropped will blow into nearby fields, streets, residences and businesses.

Who would you like to see front the Keep Britain Tidy campaign? I'd love to hear your suggestions – serious or funny – and will pass on any I get to the Tidy Britain Group.
