You can see Littlehampton and Arundel in one vast conurbation

WITH respect to the new housing estate to be built north of the railway line at Lyminster, as reported in the Littlehampton Gazette, July 3, it is appropriate that I refer to a letter I had published in the paper some months ago, stating that the area between Littlehampton and Arundel would eventually become one vast conurbation .
With the present rate of building north of Littlehampton, and the continued expansion of the area, it seems that my prediction might become a reality sooner than I had expected.

To some, this might appear to be a good thing, as the need for housin
g in this community is extreme, so we are told.

The considerations for those of us who live in and around Littlehampton are as follows:

1) The destruction of farmland and wooded areas

2) Can the area provide work for so many more inhabitants?

3) More cars, more pollution, more tail-backs

4) The destruction of wildlife

5) As a shopping centre, Littlehampton is a disgrace.

So, does planning in the area take into account the infrastructure that would be needed for an explosion in population?

Gas, electricity and water must be included.

Lastly, I would like to remark on the expansion of McCarthy & Stone developments in and around Littlehampton.

Such accommodation is sorely needed for elderly people, who find it difficult to occupy family homes, where they might well live alone.

The M and S premises that I have visited seem ideal for older people, for those who require companionship, communal living and all facilities overseen by a live-in warden, yet privacy is maintained in the excellent living quarters.

Such accommodation can also free up housing for younger people and also for families.

Developers that note, and don't tar everybody with the same slogan: Not in my backyard!

GA Harris, Armada Way, Littlehampton
