I AM totally in support of the comments by Judge Anthony Thorpe about the "inherently dangerous A259 road" at Climping, but I am afraid that white lines he suggests are not the way forward, even as a temporary solution.
We need something more prominent and permanent. With that in mind I concur with the statement by Jenny Cole, chairman of Littlehampton Cycle Action Group, that we need more cycle paths.
With all the developments going on, and most involving West
Sussex County Council highways, somewhere in the consultation procedure, why don't they just put cycle paths in as a matter of course?
This seems like common sense, especially with the increase in cycling.
What does give cause for concern is the statement by the county highways department: "After a fatal accident in West Sussex we carefully review with the police our policies regarding the road involved.
"In view of the judge's comments we will look again at this stretch of the A259."
So why does it take the words of a judge to prompt any action and for highways to look again?
What did they miss the first time?
Did county highways look at the area or not?
And if they did, what were they going to do before the judge made his comment?
Have judges become more expert on highways than the highways department that we rely on?
