HOW sad to see the front page of the Gazette (December 27), showing all the boarded-up pubs.
I agree with the view of Paul Crease, landlord of the Arun View, that the smoking ban has caused all this.

In its present form, the smoking ban is a hateful, mindless piece of legislation.

It should have provided for smoking rooms and allowed any place licensed to serve alcohol to choose for themselves.

I cannot believe that all the smokers standing outside pubs in the pouring rain are prepared to put up with this nonsense.

If anyone wants to play an active role in fighting the smoking ban, then write to me at the address below.

Don't think that you can't change things – you can.

Following the smoking ban in July, while working at Gatwick, I started a smokers' website to campaign for better facilities for smokers at Gatwick (with press coverage).

These facilities have now been introduced and it is my intention to reactivate the website for a wider protest.

Incidentally, does our local MP support the smoking ban? Please let us know, so us smokers can decide who to vote for.

Nick Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, said: "I voted for the ban because I think that people should not smoke in public places, mainly for health reasons.

"I do not think that the employees who work in restaurants and pubs should have to breathe in other people's smoke over an eight-hour shift.

"There is evidence that this damages their health, and it is unpleasant for non-smokers.

"I felt it was the reason why a lot of people did not go to pubs and restaurants."

Yes Paul this, unwanted by the majority ban is hateful.
There were never going to be enough antis to fill the pubs clubs ect. It is they who are in a minority, they are addicted to power and control, they do not care how many millions are squandered, persecuting smokers either. You could buy cheap drink from the supermarket before the ban, so that argument from the antis will not wash with me or many others.
We have not all been brainwashed by the media either. This ban is based on lies and misinformation, it is an unjust ban, as such it deserve no support.
8th August 2006 the HSE in their document OC 255/15 article9 state
" HSE cannot produce epidemiological evidence to link levels of exposure to second hand smoke to the raised risk of contacting specific diseases".

One of the longest and biggest study, was totally ignored, by Enstrom and Kabat. Too many lies have been told. Just wait until voting day.

This ban is unfair and unjust, smokers should not be treated as outcasts & "put outside" at the mercy of the weather. Landlords should be given the choice whether or not they want to allow smoking on their premises, then there would be somewhere to go to suit everybody! freedom2choosedotinfo

The Smoking Ban is destroying the hospitality industry in the UK and also forcing the elderly into a life of isolation. It is a well known fact that Second Hand Smoke does NOT kill and yet MP's refuse to listen to the truth and blindly follow the hysterical deluge of propaganda spouted out by the Anti-Smoking organisations. These same MP's would be outraged if an animal was forced into a shelter designed for smokers , in fact animal shelters (by law) provide more protection from the elements than a smoking kennel. As for Nick Gibb MP, all I can say is that smokers and non-smokers who are against the ban will remember your views and look forward to you joining the dole queue at the next election.

In answer to Nick Gibb's reasons for voting for the smoking ban -

1. Public houses are not "public places" - no one is forced to enter a pub. A clear sign above the premises would signal that "You are entering a smoking premise". Better than all the no-smoking signage that has cost the taxpayer millions.

2. The so called damage to health by passive smoking is grossly overstated and in fact in probably miniscule. Most studies do not show any signficicant risk worth worrying about.

3. Non-smokers would have the CHOICE not to enter premises that allow smoking. At the moment, smokers have ZERO choice.

4. The reasons why non-smokers did not go to pubs was the fact that they were not "pub people". Where are all the non-smokers rushing back to their smokefree pubs? No where to be seen! Meanwhile, pubs are closing at 50 per week and this will only accelerate - of course, this has nothing to do with the smoking ban.

Thanks a million Mr Gibb for taking away people's social lives and making live in the UK an absolute drag.

Well said mandyv and you are more or less right on the mark.

The main Conservative MPs in this area, being Nick Gibb, Nick Herbert, and Tim Loughton etc are so far up their own posteriors and wrapped up in their own little worlds, that they hold not real concepts of life. With such people who continue to place themselves on their own corrupt pedestals, what can the future hold for those who are trying to lead law abiding lives. Such people are intent upon changing our society, with little thought for others, more so those most vulnerable in society. Unless of course they chose to exploit such issues as the hospital campaigns, only to obtain media attention for themselves. What an insult Nick Gibbs speak was, the one titled "Imagine". Such a speech was little more that exploitation of those most vulnerable. I mean imagine those that are suffering horrendous housing conditions, because such MPs lead by example and allow those to suffer, downright despicable and scandalous, to say the least. But then the Conservatives have held the southern majority, only because they have encouraged those wealthy into the area and discouraged those less so. They continue to side track regeneration grants obtained from central Government into comfortable areas, not to mention they support to cash being stock piled from the sale of thousands of council homes. They encourage migrants into the area, but yet shout when housing is required to support the demands. I will bore you no longer, but they clearly manipulate and distort factual information, hopefully so you don’t see the real facts.

I disagree entirely that the smoking ban in the ruination of the traditional pub. What about supermarket off-licence sales? Why would anyone want to enter some run down public house (as in the case of the one featured in the gazette), breathe in a mouthful of other's smoke, and then pay upwards of £2.50 for a pint of larger, when you can enjoy the same for a fraction of the cost in the comfort of your own home? Blaming non-smoking legislation on your demise is to stick your head in the sand. Long before this legislation came into being, pubs were closing their doors. Those that stayed open were those with enough foresight to start selling quality pub food and offer decent non-smoking areas. Ironically, it was your smoking customers who drove everyone else away, and now with the smoking ban, those you invested so heavily in, have now deserted you as well. let's not forget that smoking kills. Let's not forget that the damage isn't just financial, every day, 739 new cases of cancer are diagnosed here in the UK (figures from MacMillan Cancer Support), how many lives does that destroy? How many families have to (as we did) go through the heartbreak of seeing their loved ones die? All the smoking ban has done to pubs is speed up the death of those who were already dying.

Well I support Publicans Private Property rights, pubs are not publically owned they are PRIVATE premises. Whether smoking (which is perfectly legal) takes place on private property should be the owners choice and no one elses, not the smoker, not the non smoker and definitely not the State.

This government has banned a legal product on private premises, whilst at the same time they will not lose one penny, continuing to pick up tax off the sale of cigarettes and alcohol sold at the supermarket as smokers stay at home. the only losers are Publicans who stand to lose their homes and livilhoods - disgusting

PP1 - Drink was cheap at the supermarkets before the ban. Myself and hubby, have been out once only since the ban. It is hard enough to get motivated during the winter months to go out. I am not going outside to freeze. Neither are many others, where are all you antis. When places shut down it does not just affect the smokers, it also affect the tolerant non-smokers and the antis.
Smoke - easies are popping up everywhere, like the bad old criminal days. Publicans need to survive, the goverment or the antis do not seem to be offering compensation even though it was they who forced this spiteful ban through. Along with the lies, exaggeration, and misinformation. It is about time this government woke up. They will know what it is like to be out in the cold come the next election.

Please support Tony Blows –
I am in court on 21st January at 10am at Herefordshire Magistrates court on 3 counts of allowing smoking in my pub. Please turn up in force as all the TV and Radio will be there. Together we can show them we are not going away.
Tell all your friends, lets try and get 1000 people to turn up, even more so as I believe I can win my case.
get them emails out now only 10 days to go.
Tony

When they wage the same war on alcohol and food, maybe the majority of publicans had wished they had fought this vindictive, unwanted by the majority ban.
