I WAS hoping to garner some information regarding one of the war graves in Littlehampton Cemetery.
I have sat with Royal New Zealand Air Force Pilot Officer, A. L. (Archibald Locksley) Smiley a number of times since moving to the area.
As a fellow Kiwi, I often go to pay my respects, especially at this time of year when perhaps others may not pay him particular attention; his family is probably on the other side of the world.
I was wondering if any of your readers are able to offer some insight as to how this 28-year-old pilot from 144 Squadron came to rest in our seaside town.
He died in December, 1941, but I don't know how long he was here or why.
Perhaps he was hospitalised here, or was brought ashore after a flight?
I have searched the internet a little, but hoped that someone locally may have known this man, or of him.
He lies with Canadians, Australians and British and the tiny peaceful garden they have draws me.
Can anyone help with his story?
