I THANK M. Grover for his response (Gazette, May 8) to my letter relating to a lock at the mouth of the Arun.
When responding to letters it is important to read them first.

Along with spelling my name incorrectly he talks about "damming the river".

Nowhere does my letter mention damming, it mentions a lock.

Sediment forming will not be problem, th
e lock would be open at various times during the day, allowing any sediment to disperse.

Nor will the smell be a problem – this only happens at low tide when the river bed is exposed.

If a steady height is maintained by controlling the lock then the river bed would not be exposed.

The run-off from the fields will not be problem – as the tide will not affect the water upstream, the fields can drain much more quickly.

If it is known there will be an extra high tide and heavy rain is expected, then extra river water can be let into the sea at low tide.

As the water height would be maintained at a steady level, all the areas mentioned would be safe from flooding.

Mr Grover wrote: "You mess with nature at your peril."

The human race has been doing that for the last 5,000 years.

If nothing is done, then Littlehampton will suffer.

I have spoken to many with knowledge of the river, and whilst none are jumping with joy over this issue, I know of nobody who rejects the idea out of hand, apart from Mr Grover.
