HOW ironic that Littlehampton Town Council should be considering placing a health centre on the current allotment site in Worthing Road.
Allotments impact directly on the health of those who tend them, in terms of the physical exercise gained through gardening and the healthy eating they encourage.

Furthermore, allotments contribute to a general culture of health and well-being an
d promote a sense of community, as interest is generated from such activities as the town show.

Instead of promoting these benefits, and of course the other related advantages, such as encouraging biodiversity, sustainability and reducing our carbon footprints, our council is considering uprooting current allotments in order that they can build a health centre, no doubt complete with road access and parking in their place.

Well, with the stress the council is placing upon the allotment holders while they consider this notion, many of whom are pensioners, a health centre may well be needed!

I teach in Wick and this idea seems to go against all that we are being encouraged to teach the children at this time.

What kind of an example would our council be setting to the youth of Littlehampton if they accept this proposal?

I hope they see that the benefits allotments can bring outweigh the convenience of selling off allotment land for building.
