FOLLOWING the article "Decision time on thousands of new homes" (Gazette, December 18), I expect residents of our struggling area will have a ray of hope.
It is good to see that at long last councillors such as Simon McDougall and Gill Brown, have realised what the residents of Arun have been saying for years.
Yes, build houses if we must, but first put in place the infrastructure which at present
is non-existent.
Before any homes are built, get a faceless wonder down from the government, who keep saying build, build, build, and get them to see that we have no infrastructure.
The developers who want to build houses, in truth, couldn't care less about the area – they are in it for profit only and will then be gone with bulging wallets.
We lack direct transport in the area, our roads are at gridlock point. The A27 needs to be completed at Arundel and Chichester.
In fact, this needs to be of motorway grade, so we can travel to other parts of the country.
At present, to get anywhere, we only have A23/M23 or travel west to A27/M3.
We need jobs on a large scale, with the decline of employment on The Body Shop site, and the large amount of empty retail and industrial premises.
We need tourism, so keep the Daisyfield touring caravan site and improve it.
We need a new hospital and improved medical facilities.
Once all this is met, then, and only then, build houses.
