THE Eco-Town debate is about finding solutions to social, economic and environmental problems, our approach to deprivation and the care we have for the lives our children will lead.
For those who cannot face the need to plan for sustainable growth it comes as a reality check, but short-term self-interest, and pique with the government, has to give way to meeting local needs.
Depressing reports on the housing position in Arun,
the lowest wage levels in the county, under-achievement in our schools and high commuting levels point to the need for a sea change in planning for the future.
The economic need is clear – we must attract investors in business which generates higher earnings.
Our road network is a strong disincentive, so we must convince government of the value to be derived from a bypass at Arundel and consequent improvement in the local network.
The unique opportunity to face these issues through a new settlement at Ford Airfield is clear, and it can be done in a sustainable manner with private investment in infrastructure beyond anything we, as taxpayers, are prepared to find.
Alternatively, we could plan to build 4,000 homes at both Bognor and Littlehampton and a further 3,000 in the villages, and with far less gain.
The debate and examination of the Ford option comes to us courtesy of the government and calls for rational consideration.
