REGARDING the proposed community centre at Bramley Green, I am a member of Arun's development control committee where three weeks ago this application was discussed.
During the debate I said I did not believe the green, in the middle of the estate, was the right location and felt it should be placed on the edge of the estate.
My reasoning for this is that many users living outside the estate would travel
in by car, creating unnecessary traffic and leading to increased street parking.
Unfortunately, the plans for this centre were discussed in 1995 and the place chosen was this green.
Apparently many residents were unaware of this when they purchased their properties and are now complaining they were not consulted, as they agree this is the wrong place.
At the end of the debate, I abstained from the vote, as I did not agree that this was the right place, but as there were no planning reasons to object to it, I have to be guided by planning law.
On Saturday, I visited the opening of the skateboard park on the edge of Bramley Green.
This is situated to the south of the estate, at the end of Mayflower Way.
Alongside this is is a large piece of land, ideal for the community centre, with access from Mayflower Way and no traffic going through the estate.
At a previous development control meeting, where a large development in the west of Arun was discussed, it was proposed to place a school and a health centre in the middle of the estate.
Again, this would attract many people and vehicles from outside the estate.
I objected to this, but gained no support from other members.
The school will not be built until the estate is finished, so I expect a rerun in a few years' time.
