HOW on earth can we believe the headline (Gazette, May 8), "Eight wise heads chosen", regarding this so-called Arun select committee that will hear and pronounce on the evidence for and against the proposed Eco-Town?
It is clear those selected, a kind of Liberal/Tory caucus, have already made up their minds.
The Tory Arun District Council majority have come out against it, and so have the Liberals, led, it now seems, by councillor Dr James Walsh the Littleham
pton mayor.
The two Tory MPs, Nick Gibb and Nick Herbert, declared against the proposal as soon as it was announced.
I cannot help but think this is an anti-government, rather than anti-Eco-Town campaign, as councillor Mike Northeast suggested.
It is right and proper to criticise and oppose the government if they are wrong.
However; I believe, like James Walker and Tom Bolby (Gazette letters, May 1), that people should wait to learn the facts before jumping to concusions based on rumour and speculation, fostered by people with a political agenda.
This proposed Eco-Town may, or may not, be the lifeline this area needs, e.g. giving young people the opportunity of a home of their own, pointing the way forward for all of us to save this dear planet of ours, and learning how to use and conserve the earth and its finite resources.
This is what an Eco-Town might do.
Finally, if they want anyone to take the slightest notice of this select committee's report, may I suggest it be made up of people who are really neutral and unprejudiced, and not stuffed with those who have already declared against the Eco-Town?
