AFTER reading your story "Try out new seafront bench" (Gazette, March 4), I did.
Being an all-round open-minded and creative person, I very much welcome innovation and change. I love the East Beach Cafe design, for instance, and feel it does enhance our quite beautiful seafront.
And, having been an employee at The Body Shop In
ternational from 1982-99, I feel certain that Dame Anita Roddick would support the bench project, as her husband and family do.
However, to demolish two seemingly perfectly sound shelters to accommodate the bench seems rather harsh.
I've witnessed entire families ensconced within their shelters, complete with sundry beach and picnic paraphernalia. Many times I have sat, winter or summer, to soak up the sun, or the wonderful ambience, even, during winter, observing a wondrous electrical storm.
So I ventured to the Civic Centre and duly sat on the bench. Yes, it is quite innovative in its design, however long. But may I suggest a further claim for it? How about the world's most uncomfortable bench? I dare anyone, however they are built, and whatever age, to linger on the bench.
I feel the bench will remain a visual attraction to our lovely beach, but it will remain uncluttered by humans who might want a more comfortable seat.
