FORD ECO-TOWN: Too serious to be simply personal

MUCH has been said of the visit of Housing Minister Caroline Flint, when she met councillors, MPs, proponents and opponents of a proposed Eco-Town at Ford.
She visited Littlehampton and toured the airfield site with her officials, in order to get a feel for the area, before the public meeting in Yapton.

A number of comments have been made concerning her use of the words "articulate, confident and ric
h" to describe the CAFE campaigners.

It is clear that she used these to demonstrate that there are also people among us who have not been heard, they are neither articulate, nor confident and are certainly not rich.

If they were, they would not be on Arun's housing waiting list.

Yapton itself has a population of around 3,850 with a housing waiting list of 200.

This is 5.2 per cent wanting an affordable home.

In Bognor and Littlehampton there are 2,000 and 1,700 on the list, respectively.

Are these people to be denied a voice?

She, together with the Labour councillors, is speaking up for them.

It has been said by critics that this "silent minority" would not be interested in moving into a new Eco-Town on Ford Airfield.

Have they been asked?

Would they not enjoy the benefits of a lovely, clean, new town with parks, gardens, water features, trees and community facilities, all in a virtually traffic-free environment with first-class public transport, free in-town and well connected with local towns and villages?

Yes, there will also be shops, a food market with local produce, a surgery, schools and faith facilities all within easy reach.

Two thousand families may well get the opportunity, as 40 per cent of the homes will be affordable for both rent and purchase.

Arun already has enquiries for homes in the Eco-Town.

How many of the recently completed houses and flats in Yapton are available at affordable rents or prices?

Caroline Flint showed concern for the traffic congestion in the area.

Maybe she experienced it herself.

Let's hope she raises our road problems, including the A27, with her opposite number in the Department of Transport.

These will have to be addressed to attract business investors, wherever the development takes place in Arun.

The debate has been strong, sometimes bitter and now getting personal, which is a shame, as this is too serious for a campaign to merely tell the minister: "It's a good idea, but not here, try it somewhere else."

Some very true words John;) and thank you for your input. You see everything is not black and white, as such campaigns demonstrate, is it?

Such campaigns highlight the voices of those with the dosh and knowledge behind them, but it somewhat ignores those left behind in the vacuum of suffering such disgraceful hardships in this day an age, don't you think. Not to mention we are told so frequently that times have moved on and people have never had it so good etc really? I wonder who shouts such utter rubbish, oops! Must be those in comfortable positions and hold very little, if any concepts of reality, maybe it's those denied a voice or could it be those bullied by the system to shut up because of fear?

Nevertheless, Arun District have ignored social housing issues for far to long and it's about time they reinvested those millions, which they obtained from selling off large portions of the housing stock. Wouldn't that seem fair and justified in this day an age?

On the subject of it being personal, well, I guess that is the point, it is personal. Because the issues in the Storey highlighted back in 2005 (http://www.littlehamptongazette.co.uk/news/Council-housing-in-crisis.1257411.jp) has not been addressed. In fact those 3 children are suffering such cruellest imposed upon them by a favouritisms housing system. Whilst the Housing Dept appears to delight in giving out repetitive excuses "we don't have the housing stock". Or a member of the Housing Staff quote "even my daughter is waiting". Yeah right!

People suffering at the hands of such a blinkered Housing Dept, not to mention a Council with very little visions, could tell of such crazy services, it's unreal.

It is personal and will be moreso as time goes on, watch this space....

Hey! Look at Arun District Council recent survey they have sent to tenants asking for opinions. Then look closer and you will notice that most questions are not concerning the state of services, but seeking personal

Complete and utter tripe from ex-councillor John Penfold as usual - To present yourself as a champion of the poor and disadvantaged is predictable given that you are losing the arguments, but disgraceful nevertheless.
Here are some examples of rich and priviliged groups in society for you:
1. Landowners selling land at a vast profit
2. Westminster Politicians
3. Housing Developers

"Wontbedruv" Correct and thanks for highlighting how some ex-councillors are so two-faced, not ot mention of course some of the current councillors.

Labour Councilliors who hold a minority, but jump on the bandwagon to highlight poverty issues, but do they campaign to support them? NO. Maybe this could be because the current housing shambals, started by Thatcher, then continued by Blair and the Labour ideologies. So they have little room to shout, do they? Moreso, locally, the Labour Councillors obtain media attention, but they refuse to support those suffering, by way of campaigning etc.

Arun District, in fact West Sussex have ignored the Social Housing Crisis, maybe this is to ensure Conservative majorities?

Southern Counties should be forced to build Social Housing, none moreso than Arun District Council. Having said that Arun District Council most certainly needs fresh blood with far greater visions.
