I WAS astonished by the article in your paper suggesting I did not go to the site of the proposed Ford eco-town during my visit last month.
When I first arrived in Yapton, I viewed the whole site from the former runway of Ford airfield.
This was enormously helpful in my subsequent meetings with developers, local authorities and MPs, as well as the meeting I held with the CAFE opposit
ion group.
My main message in those meetings is that there is no "done deal" for developers over eco-towns.
There is clearly a need for more housing in the region, especially more affordable housing, and this is an issue that cannot be ducked.
But we must consider whether an eco-town is the best approach, and how to address important issues raised at the meetings such as local concerns over traffic levels and fears of increased congestion.
There will be a further consultation before deciding up to 10 potential locations across the country.
If Ford makes that final shortlist, the developers will still need to go through the planning process, which will be subject to full public consultation.
