A total of 28 individuals took the plunge 185ft above The Martlets as it staged the first event of its kind in the area.

They were carried up to the top of a 200ft mobile crane on the still stepped out from its safety cage into the sky.

They came to a halt some 15ft above the pub's car park and grounds off West Meads Drive which were packed with hundreds of customers throughout the occasion.

Pub manager Paul Stephens was the first to jump. He said: "It was fantastic. As you are going to the top, you wonder if it is a good thing to be doing.

"When you get there, you think you might as well get on with it. Stepping out of the safety cage gives you a combination of a feeling of fear and exhilaration."

The jumpers were lowered to the ground once they had finished bouncing around in the sky.

Many others took advantage of the crane's presence for a trip to its top in the cage for a bird's eye view of the surrounding area from the unrivalled vantage point.

The crane was so popular that its opening hours were extended from 6-8pm until 9.30pm to mean its final visitors enjoyed a night-time experience.

The bungee jumping was the highlight of the pub's charity evening where £800 was raised for the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.
