Education watchdog Ofsted said pupils at the independent girls' school enjoy contact with family and friends and are given opportunities to express their opinions and make choices about their lives.

The report looked at the minimum standards required for boarding schools.

Inspectors said Lavant House's provision for helping the children achieve well and enjoy what they do was 'outstanding'.

"The school provides an excellent standard of boarding welfare which is provided by the headmistress and the experienced house staff.

"All of the boarders talked about enjoying being with the other girls and spending time in the group. All cultural and religious needs are respected and the school attempts to meet all the boarders needs in this area," the inspector's report said.

The school is also commended for promoting a healthy lifestyle, for helping pupils make a positive contribution through meetings and discussions and for protecting pupils from harm or neglect and helping them stay safe.

Areas identified for improvement by inspectors included the recommendations to ensure the school matron is trained in a four-day first-aid course; to ensure that medical consent is taken on trips and activities away from the school and to ensure a full policy is in place on the process used when a pupil goes missing.

Headmistress Marian Scott said: "My staff and I are delighted the inspectors have recognised and reported favourably on the exceptional strengths and positive qualities of the education offered to girls at Lavant House, particularly the outstanding level of pastoral care alongside excellent achievement at GCSE."
