Secret life of dog Eddie

Joanna Karlsson, of London Road, St Leonards, explained: “Eddie has been with us since 2008. “We acquired him through a local lady who helped to re-house dogs. She was told that Eddie’s owner had died and that Eddie was found next to her on the bed. “Eddie had fleas and mange, which the vet treated. The vet thought he was about four years old at the time. “He is a great little dog, full of beans yet very obedient. We also have a two year old French Bulldog called Pogo and the two dogs are great pals. “Last week Eddie went missing and eventually ended up at Hastings Police Station. “When we went to collect him we were shocked to be told that Eddie belonged to another family and that he had been stolen from them eight years previously. “Apparently Eddie was micro- chipped and their number came up when the police carried out checks. “The vet who we took him to back in 2008 obviously hadn’t checked to see if he was chipped. “The rightful owners turned out to be a lovely couple from Ripe near Lewes. “When they saw how much we loved Eddie and how well we had looked after him, they thought it only fair that he should stay with us. They then related Eddie’s life story to us. “Eddie started his life with an eccentric lady who had loads of dogs, cats and other animals. “She was devoted to her pets but was elderly and had to go into a care home, so all the animals were re-housed. “That was when the owners, Robin and Jill took Eddie on. He was about a year old at the time and they named him Sherbet. “They also had a Golden Retriever, and had a big pen for the dogs in their garden, so the dogs could have a run when they went out. “One day Robin and Jill returned home to find the pen had been broken into, their Golden Retriever was shaking and traumatised and Eddie had been taken. “They later found out that people had been stealing terriers in the area and were convinced that Eddie had been taken by them. “Robin and Jill were beside themselves with worry for years, not knowing what had happened to Eddie and whether he had been mistreated. “We will never know how Eddie had been treated all those years ago or how he ended up coming to Hastings from Ripe, but we are real dog lovers. Eddie and Pogo go for long walks every day and are cherished members of our family.” Joanna added: “So that is Eddie’s story and we are so glad it has a happy ending.
